2008 Results:
The Land Conservancy’s 18th Annual Creek Day event in the City of San Luis Obispo was oustanding!   THANK YOU to all our volunteers, supporters and sponsors.

A total of
170 volunteers from the community and organized groups made the event an overwhelming success with help from the SLO City Rangers and The Land Conservancy staff.  Volunteers spent the morning scouring roughly 20 identified sites along the main urban creeks that drain the City of San Luis Obispo including Stenner Creek, Prefumo Creek and San Luis Obispo Creek.

In just three hours, these dedicated volunteers filled a 40-yard dumpsters to overflowing with bicycles, scrap metal, construction debris, shopping carts, tires, a TV, and various fast-food litter items.  The total trash removed weighed about 3 tons.  Some interesting finds included a pair of high heels, a moss-covered buddha statue, a set of silverware and a full bottle of ketchup.  An additional 10 extra-large curbside recycle bins were full to the brim with cardboard, bottles and cans meaning that about 350 pounds of material will be recycled instead of thrown into the landfill.

Assemblyman Sam Blakeslee and his staff participated again this year along with veteran Creek Day volunteer, SLO County Supervisor Bruce Gibson.  Families from The Laureate Private School worked on San Luis Obispo Creek in Cuesta Park, while other students from Laguna Middle School Science Club scoured the downtown creekside areas.  Rotary de Tolosa engaged about 30 volunteers to clear the creeks running through Damon Garcia Sports Complex.  The SLO County Tobacco Control Program tasked volunteers with picking up cigarette butts which will provide data for the program's outreach efforts.  And all volunteers were treated to delicious cinnamon rolls generously donated by the SLO Baked Bakeries, a local philanthropic business.
